The Molecular Frontiers newsletter will be issued four times per year
to inform about current plans and recent activities.  Additional
information is available on the Web site, www.molecularfrontiers.org.
In this first issue, the editorial team wants to thank all who have
contributed to the birth of the organization through participation in
discussions or meetings, or with suggestions or comments.

Molecular Frontiers Foundation Status

On September 27, 2006 the Molecular Frontiers Foundation, Inc. was
incorporated in Massachusetts.  An application to the U.S. Internal
Revenue Service has been filed for non-profit, 501(c)(3) status.

A sister foundation, Stiftelsen Molecular Frontiers, will likely soon be
founded in Sweden.  The two organizations will to the largest extent
possible operate in unison.

Boards

The Scientific Advisory Board has 24 members, including scientists
from 14 countries:

Four members have been appointed to the Governing board:
Bengt Nordén, Chair
Shuguang Zhang, Secretary
Erik Thulstrup, Treasurer
Brenda Hershbach-Jarrell

The executive branch of Molecular Frontiers now includes:
Richard Zare, President
Magdalena Eriksson, Vice President
Erik Thulstrup, Vice President

Funding

Thus far, VINNOVA (the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation
Systems) has contributed SEK 400,000 (~USD 50,000) to Molecular
Frontiers.  This contribution primarily supports the development of
the Web site, see below.

Activities

The MIT Molecular Frontiers Club has started with two events
announced.  Scientific Advisory Board member Benoit Mandelbrot will
give two lectures:

The Smooth and the Rough in Nature and Culture
Monday, November 6, 2006
Room 10-250 7:30–10pm

The Mandelbrot Set Fractal Models in Finance
Wed. November 8 2006
Room 10-250 7:30–10pm

Web site

A preliminary Molecular Frontiers Web site
(www.molecularfrontiers.org) is now available. Per Thorén, who is
based in Gothenburg, Sweden directs the development of a permanent
site that will allow future expansion and more advanced features. The
Web site will, according to plans, become publicly accessible in early
2007.  Thereafter, Per will continue with the development of a
separate Web site dedicated to young people's activities.  The domain
names MoleClues.org/net/com have been reserved for the youth Web site.

Conference

On February 2, 2007, Molecular Frontiers will hold a symposium on the
subject of protein folding at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in
Stockholm, Sweden.  On February 3, the Scientific Advisory Board will
focus on discussions about future activities and strategies.
